A student pilot is any pilot who is receiving training without having a private pilot, commercial pilot, or ATP certificate.

A student pilot certificate is not required before commencing flight training, however, it is required prior to solo. The student's medical certificate is also his/her student pilot certificate. For student pilots who do not require a medical certificate (sport pilot students), the student pilot certificate must be issued by the local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO).

Student pilot certificates must be endorsed for solo and solo cross country flights before these activities are undertaken by a student.
