The Sport Pilot category was created by the FAA in 2004 to open aviation to enthusiasts who had less stringent demands. Thus, they require less training than a Private Pilot or Recreational Pilot. They may only fly Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) for which they are certificated, and must fly in daylight VFR conditions only. A maximum of one passenger may accompany a sport pilot in flight.

One of the more dramatic changes with the sport pilot certification is that an FAA medical certificate is not required.
