The Recreational Pilot certificate was created by the FAA to allow pilots with only limited Private Pilot needs to be certificated. Generally, recreational pilots may only carry one passenger in day VFR conditions and must have additional training and an endorsement to fly more than 50 nautical miles from their home airport.

A recreational pilot must qualify for and obtain an FAA medical certificate.

The recreational pilot program has had only limited popularity among student pilots. The newer Sport Pilot certification is having much more success.
