Flight Service Stations (FSS) operate to assist pilots with weather and other flight-related questions. Primarily, they are responsible for giving Weather Briefings and for handling flight plans. A local FSS can be reached anywhere in the United States by calling 1-800-wx-brief.

May 2007: In a continuing effort to consolidate Flight Service Stations, the FAA is closing 42 Flight Stations. All work handled by these closed stations will be moved to three major hubs, one in Washington DC, one in Fort Worth, and one in Prescott (AZ).

In addition, 16 Flight Service Stations are being refitted and will remain. Among these are San Diego, Denver, Honolulu, Oakland, Seattle, and Macon.
