There are a bunch of organizations or associations that help promote aviation and flying. These are just a few of them:

Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA)

AOPA is a large organization that promotes General Aviation and monitors regulations and bills that might negatively affect General Aviation. They publish two magazines for their members and offer a whole batch of additional services such as Insurance, Legal Plans, and Aviation Medical Guidance.

Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)

EAA puts on the largest airshow in the world each year, AirVenture. Over 10,000 aircraft converge on Oshkosh, WI during this show. The publish two magazines for their members and were instrumental in getting the new Sport Pilot regulations and certificate implemented.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP)

Since World War II, this volunteer organization has served the community with search and rescue and disaster/recovery services. It is the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary.
